This is a review of the Harbor Freight Storm Cat 900 Peak/800 Running Watts, 2 HP (63cc) Gas Generator, Item # 60338.
There have been many reviews on this generator, both on YouTube and on Harbor Freight’s website. Hopefully this one will help.
This is a great portable generator. For the price, it’s right. It does have a limited capacity as far as wattage is concerned, so you should be careful about what you’re planning to power up. The power output is not well regulated, so I would recommend you not plug any kind of sensitive electronics into it. It will work great with lights, fans, small motors, etc., provided the wattage is not exceeded.
Remember to start your capacitive (induction) loads first, then resistive loads later.
Most have said that the spark plug it comes with is junk and should be replaced. It seems to run fine to me, so I’ll leave it for now, but it’s not a problem to change should it need it, because not only is the plug easily accessible, a spark plug wrench is also included with the unit.
The recoil (starter rope) mechanism is made of plastic, so due care should be taken while cranking this engine. Do so firmly but gently, don’t let the rope snap back, and it should do fine. This is a great portable generator, and the noise level really isn’t too bad–two people can practically talk normally to each other over the noise from the unit.
The unit can run for 5 hours at 50% capacity, so that’s 400 watts for 5 hours, using about 1 gallon of fuel (plus 2-cycle oil).
If you don’t have a generator, this is a great unit to pick up, and the price is certainly right. It won’t run any big loads, but is enough to keep you somewhat comfortable in the event of a loss of the mains.
